Let’s face it, working with a chainsaw that has a dull saw chain isn’t ideal. The machine doesn’t perform the way it’s supposed to and places it under unnecessary strain. And over time, the extra wear and tear can shorten your chainsaw’s lifespan.
A dull chain also makes the operator work harder, causing fatigue and even creating potential safety risks. Add to that the frustration of reduced productivity—and the inconvenience of leaving the job site to sharpen the chain—and it’s clear why on-site sharpening is a game-changer.
Easily Sharpen Your Chainsaw on the Worksite
PFERD TOOLS offers solutions to sharpen chainsaws directly on the work site. The CHAIN SHARP CS-X, in particular, is probably the simplest and quickest way to manually sharpen a saw chain and keep your chainsaw in top condition.

This tool allows you to sharpen the saw teeth and adjust the depth gauge at the same time—no other file or tools are needed. Because it’s gentler than machine-based sharpening, it helps prolong the operating life of your saw chain. |
The CHAIN SHARP CS-X is available for various saw chain pitches, including 4mm, 4.8mm, 5.16mm, and 5.5mm. Each kit consists of a depth gauge file and two round chainsaw files, making it versatile and user-friendly.
How to use the CHAIN SHARP CS-X
Step 1: Secure the chainsaw on a level surface or in a vice
Place your chainsaw on a stable surface or clamp it in a stump vice. Ensuring it is secure will prevent slipping and make sharpening safer and more accurate.
Step 2: Choose the correct CHAIN SHARP CS-X
Select the CHAIN SHARP that corresponds with your chainsaw's chain pitch.
Step 3: Sharpen the saw teeth
Mark one of the teeth to indicate your starting position. The most efficient way to sharpen is to complete all the teeth facing one direction before flipping the CHAIN SHARP over to sharpen the teeth facing the other direction.
- The arrow on the sharpener's blue handle shows the correct filing direction.

With the sharpener in the tooth, keep the tool's blue handles parallel to the chainsaw guide bar. Also, make sure the CHAIN SHARP remains at a 90° angle to the guide bar below.

Push the sharpener forward until the rear blue handle reaches the guide bar, then pull it back and repeat several times. Use smooth, even strokes and avoid applying excessive pressure.
Step 4: Flip the CHAIN SHARP over
Once you’ve sharpened all the teeth in one direction, flip the CHAIN SHARP over and repeat the process on the teeth facing the opposite direction. Again, follow the arrow on the blue handle, to ensure you're sharpening in the correct direction.
Available accessories
The CHAIN SHARP CS-X's individual round chainsaw files and the depth gauge file can easily be replaced. There are also various accessories such as handles, guide sleeves and stump vices available.
